This section explains what is a variation in “sex characteristics” (VSC). This includes umbrella terms, and the historical and current context. Then we report on the core principles at play and our research findings which aimed to understand the key factors influencing decision making from the perspective of parents, young people with a VSC and health professionals working in the field.
